Growing More Than Crops – Growing Futures

Welcome To

Growing More Than Crops – Growing Futures.

Twenty-five years ago, Dan and Tom met by chance. What started as a friendship has grown into a shared mission to change the landscape of smallholder farming in East Africa.

Tom, who grew up between Kenya and Botswana, has a deep affinity for the region and its people. As an expert horticulturist, he understands the land intimately and is passionate about supporting the farmers who work it. Dan brings 30 years of agricultural and commercial experience through his family business, Wherry & Son – a respected seed company established in 1806 and soon to be proudly passed to its eighth generation.

In 2020, Dan took his partner and son to Africa for three months during the COVID pandemic. While there, a chance discovery sparked something bigger: an opportunity to bridge a gap. Many farmers were growing maize for their own consumption, but few had access to profitable crops or reliable markets.

What if things could be different?

Artisem was born from that simple question.

Across much of Africa, access to capital is limited, and smallholder farmers are often overlooked. There’s no safety net, and little support. Most grow just enough to feed their families – with few opportunities to break that cycle.

We’re not here with quick fixes or charity.
We’re here to help farmers help themselves.

By providing access to high-quality sesame seed, hands-on agricultural training, and a trusted route to market, Artisem gives farmers the tools to build sustainable, profitable livelihoods—starting in Kenya and growing outward.

This is about creating lasting change: farmer by farmer, field by field.

Thanks for visiting. We’re excited to share this journey with you.
